Young Talent
16th June 2019
Sunday afternoon saw Newport Jazz Club play host to two young rising stars from the islands jazz community. Opening the afternoon was "Pick up 6". Led by tenor sax player Cameron Tarry they are graduates of the Island Free School where they were members of the school jazz band. With an average age of 16 they celebrated the completion of their GCSE exams with a magnificent one hour set.
Alongside Cameron were Oz Glanville on soprano sax, Ted Henly on trumpet, Jess Mudge on trombone, Eli Tucker on drums and Charlie Walford on baritone sax.
With a mixed set of standards and more recent numbers given a jazz twist there was plenty of opportunity for the band to play together and for the individuals to showcase their individual talents.
For the second set the stage was given over to Middlesex University graduate, and Lisa Simpson protégé Dominic Jones. Supported by Jim Thorn on piano, Sandor Sztankovics on drums and Jez Gray on bass and with a guest appearance from Cameron Tarry he led the band through a mix of jazz standards including Charlie Parkers "My Blue Suede shoes" and Erroll Garner's "Misty" before closing with his self penned homage to Monty Python "Now for Domething Completely Different".A thoroughly entertaining afternoon that had the audience applauding for more and a number of requests to see these young performers again.
