Tom Millar Quartet
7th April 2019
Sunday saw the debut visit to Newport Jazz Club of London based pianist, composer and bandleader Tom Millar.
After reading Music at King's College, Cambridge, Tom studied jazz piano and composition for a Masters at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and later with Django Bates in Berne, Switzerland.
With a set drawn largely on his 2017 debut release, Unnatural Events, in 2017, Tom led the band through an enthralling set of largely self-penned compositions with the addition of a couple of numbers penned by guitarist Alex Monk. Every number received an enthusiastic response from the audience suggesting that the future of UK jazz is in safe hands.
Tom was accompanied by Alex Monk on guitar, Misha Mullov-Abbado on bass and Dave Storey on drums. All musicians front their own bands and are names to be watched over the coming years.
The next concert will be the "Young Talent" concert featuring sets from young island sax players Cameron Tarry and Dominic Jones. Tickets can be reserved by 'phoning Gerry Cullis on 730601 or Bill Wills on 523879. The concert is at the Apollo Theatre and starts at 3.00pm.
