David Newton Trio
12th February 2017
Following their successful premier of the album "Big screen, Take 1" in 2015 the members of Newport Jazz Club were on Sunday afternoon treated to a return visit by the David Newton Trio for an afternoon of more music from the big screen.
Regularly voted best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz awards David is no stranger to the big screen having composed for a number of movies. With strong support from Matt Skelton (drums) and Tom Farmer (bass) a packed Apollo audience were treated to a feast of top class musical entertainment.
On a stage still, appropriately for the movie theme, set for the Apollo's recent Ealing classic "The Lavender Hill Mob" the trio opened with a rousing version of "The surrey with the fringe on top" from Oklahoma. From then on the audience were treated to a selection of numbers not featured on the original album suggesting that there is considerable scope for a follow up "Take 2". Such was the superb standard that it was difficult to pick out individual numbers as highlights but "Alice in Wonderland" that closed the first set was a particular favourite. Closing the concert with a rousing blues the audience showed their well-deserved appreciation with a standing ovation.
