Nette Robinson and Tony Woods

16th October 2022

Sunday 16 October saw vocalist Nette Robinson make a long overdue return to Newport Jazz Club along with multi-instrumentalist husband Tony Woods.

On previous visits Nette has chosen a themed repertoire but on Sunday she provided a feast of varieties opening with a vocal version of Charlie Parker's Scrapple from the Apple immediately followed by the contrast of Hoagy Carmichael's Skylark. Thereafter she variously delved into the songbooks of George Gershwin and Bill Evans whilst saving a treat until towards the end when she performed a number Fog written by now retired local musician Peter Trueman, based on a poem by Peter's daughter, with whom she had often worked on previous visits.

Tony Woods provided musical direction whilst putting in excellent performances on alto sax, clarinet and flute with new to the club pianist Terence Collie, who literally walked straight off the ferry and onto the stage, garnering rave support for his performance as well.

The rhythm section holding everything together were Tim Marshall on electric bass and Bill Wills on drums.

The next concert will be on 13 November when the club welcomes Chris Walker's Pedigree Jazz Band. The concert starts at 3.00pm at the Apollo Theatre, Pyle Street, Newport and tickets are available from Bill Wills on 523879
