Roger Marks' Cornish Armada

18th August 2019

Sunday saw the re-arranged debut at Newport Jazz Club of Roger Marks' Cornish Armada Jazz Band. And judging by audience reaction it was well wort the wait.

Opening their 18 number set with Kid Thomas' "Algiers strut" the band soon had the audience stomping along as they intertwined their way through a set of trad jazz numbers and a number of jokes and gags that kept the audience thoroughly entertained.

The band displayed an ability to mix their set with a number of traditional New Orleans trad numbers with some more modern numbers given a trad twist.
They also included a self-penned composition "Sheila" written by banjoist Pete Sumner and dedicated to his wife.

A thoroughly entertaining afternoon that had the audience clamoring for more and a well-deserved encore.

Led by Roger Marks on trombone the band also featured Graham Trevarton on trumpet, Gordon Stafford on clarinet, Pete Sumner on banjo, Tony Mann on sousaphone and Jim Renton on drums.
